Introduction to Our Contributors’ Art
Our Summer 2013 edition features Nani Chesire and Jocelyn White whom we are proud to publish for the first time, and veteran artists Liz Walker and Anne John who grace our pages with their experienced and noted work. Four distinct styles, four notable voices, all creating art for very personal reasons.
Featured art by Liz Walker
We are pleased to showcase painter Liz Walker as our featured artist. Her rich palette is a perfect match to the vibrant colors of summer.
Liz explains, “My paintings are about color and shape and how to best balance the two within a rectangle or square. I often start out with a patterned, marbled background. Then I stand back and evaluate what’s there – sometimes making the shapes into a human form. It’s that element of ‘What if?’ that keeps it interesting for me and, I hope, for the viewer.”
Liz has a B.A. in Art from Trinity University in San Antonio, and has been active in the local art scene since moving to Portland from Boston in 1999. She began painting in watercolor in 1991 and now works primarily in acrylic and marbling. Liz’s favorite subject matter is fanciful people in everyday settings. Color is an essential part of her work, but she also enjoys telling a “story” within each painting.
A member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon, Oregon Society of Artists and Northwest Watercolor Society, Liz’s award winning paintings have been displayed throughout the Northwest. Go to www.lizwalkerart.com to find out about upcoming exhibits and see images of her latest paintings.
