Lots of writers have written about journeys or pilgrimages to places of great importance, whether it’s to a childhood home or a cemetery, to a decrepit ballpark or a particular beach on the coast. Resolve to visit that site again, only after having jotted down a question you hope to answer by going on your journey. Take note of everything you see and hear and smell, any encounters you have along the way with humans or the environment. Draft a piece about your journey and experience staying as close as possible to the actual beginning and end of it. Where it’s absolutely essential, you can fill in back story about previous journeys to the same place but the current journey has to be the central focus.
