SUBMISSION GUIDELINES, 2008
Our guidelines vary depending on the genre. Genre specific guidelines as follows:
Basics:
(1) VoiceCatcher publishes NEW writing that has not been previously published elsewhere. While we do take simultaneous submissions, we do not take any work that has been already published.
(2) We ONLY accept submissions from women who consider themselves local Portland, OR writers. Authors may consider themselves "local" for many reasons -- we fully empower you to decide if you fall into this category of being a PDX writer or not. (At the same time, please be reasonable. You cannot be local if you have never lived here or near here.)
(3) Payment to our authors is one complimentary copy of the book in which the author's work is published.
Poetry: Please submit no less than 2 and no more than 4 poems for consideration. Longer poems should not exceed 6 pages. Poems should be single-spaced.
Short Story, Essay, Creative Non-fiction, Memoir, Other Long-form Prose: Please submit no more than 2 pieces of prose. Total prose submission should not exceed 5,000 words in total. Prose should be double-spaced.
If submitting in both poetry and prose, please do not submit more than 4 pieces total. Word counts for multi-genre submissions should adhere to counts for each genre.
- We specifically do not accept pornography or works that utilize hate speech.
- VoiceCatcher retains first American rights to all pieces published in our collection. From there, rights revert back to our authors.

Your submission packet should include the following elements: A cover letter, THREE copies of each piece of writing, and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE).
1) Your cover letter should include, but is not limited to: - Introduction. - Short synopsis of why you feel drawn to contribute to our publication. - Your contact information, including mailing address, email, and phone. Please take special care with contact information, including providing redundency where possible (both home and cell numbers, for instance) and copyediting your information carefully. Unfortunately (it broke our hearts too), one of the authors whose piece was chosen in 2007 was not published because we were unable to reach her for an electronic copy of her work. Please do not let this happen to you!
2) Your manuscript(s): - Should be 12-point font with paragraphs indented and one-inch margins. - Must include the page number, title, word count total, and author’s last name on each page of THREE copies of each manuscript.
DEADLINE: Work must be postmarked by March 31, 2008
Additional info: - We will confirm receipt of your manuscript(s). We will not return manuscripts. - Simultaneous submissions are accepted. - If we do publish your work in VoiceCatcher, you will receive 1 copy of the Anthology and be given the opportunity to purchase additional copies at a discount. - All manuscripts not accepted for publication receive a personalized editorial response from our editors.
