Hello, and thank you to all our authors, readers, and fans for all your enthusiasm and support during the publication of our Spring 2021 issue. As autumn approaches and we now turn toward prepping for the Fall issue, we’re seeking to fill some openings for our board of directors and editorial teams.
VoiceCatcher started as, and remains, an all-volunteer organization. That means its vision only becomes reality when passionate members of our community step up to help.
For Fall 2021, the following volunteer positions are opening up on the VoiceCatcher Board of Directors.
The President shall be the chief officer of the corporation and shall act as the Chair of the Board. The President shall have any other powers and duties as may be prescribed by the Board of Directors.
The president shall have overall responsibility for
- Scheduling, setting the agenda for, and guiding board meetings
- Addressing and implementing high-level concerns and ideas, such as the direction of the journal, our demographic and geographic service area, appropriate and inclusive language, etc.
- Recruiting for board roles and ensuring all roles are supported
- Establishing submissions windows, publications timelines, and pub dates for each issue of the journal in conjunction with managing editors
- Ensuring journal accounts (e.g., GoDaddy and WordPress, Submittable, etc.) are active
- Managing and overseeing the creation and updates of process documents (e.g., the handbook, a style guide, guides for social media, events, and editorial)
Vice President, Marketing and Outreach Committee
The vice president shall have responsibility for
- Overseeing and supporting the website manager and social media and events coordinator roles as part of the marketing and outreach committee
- Develop overarching marketing efforts, such as marketing and/or social media campaigns, outreach events, etc.
- Support the president in other tasks as needed
The treasurer shall have overall responsibility for
- Creating and tracking annual budget
- Providing data on budget-to-actuals every quarter
- Writing and tracking checks
- Balancing bank statements monthly
- Organizing and storing financial information
- Any other duties as may be prescribed by the board of directors
The website manager shall have responsibility for
- Managing the website and ensuring our information remains up to date
- Assembling the digital journal for publication each season (two per year)
- Composing and sending out newsletters in conjunction with the social media and events coordinator
The web manager ideally has experience with WordPress (including the new Gutenberg version), WordPress plugins, light HTML, and very light CSS. Must also be comfortable with using or learning to use Mailchimp.
Social Media and Events Coordinator (filled)
The social media and events coordinator shall have responsibility for
- Creating a social media and blog content calendar featuring a variety of content, such as author spotlights, publication announcements, relevant literary or art news, etc.
- Posting regularly to the journal’s social media channels, including Facebook and Twitter
- Overseeing and soliciting content for blog posts (in conjunction with the web admin)
- Managing events for the journal, including readings
- Scheduling date and time, booking a venue, and contacting and scheduling readers
- Coordinating with event cohosts (e.g., Plonk), when applicable
The managing editors shall have responsibility for
- Overseeing one of our two editorial teams (poetry or prose)
- Receiving submissions as they come in (usually from Submittable, though we used Google Forms in 2020 due to the high cost of Submittable; will revisit Submittable for 2021)
- Sending declined notices for pieces that do not meet submission criteria or that have been declined by the editorial team
- Assigning pieces to the editorial team to be read and voted on for acceptance or rejection
- Notifying accepted authors if they’re “accepted as is” or “accepted with edits”
- Assigning editors to work with authors who need edits
- Compiling completed and proofread pieces and author bios and delivering them to the web admin for publication
In addition to the positions on the Board of Directors, we’re also looking for poetry and prose editors.
Poetry and Prose Editors
The poetry and prose editors shall have responsibility for
- Serving on one of VoiceCatcher’s two editorial teams: poetry or prose
- Collaborating with team of editors to read and evaluate all entries and select final pieces that best support the journal’s mission
- Guiding authors through global edits and copyedits on accepted pieces leading up to publication
- Providing constructive feedback on pieces at each submitter’s request
- Composing table of contents and introduction in collaboration with the editorial team for assigned section of the journal (poetry or prose)
