Whether sketching scenic vistas during road trips, getting to know the individual voices of the crow family that shares her property, or researching native Oregon species, feature artist (and native Oregonian herself) Clare Carpenter pays attention to the natural world around her. Clare’s curiosity and respect towards this world and a love of the printed image combine in the hand-carved linoleum block prints that grace this season’s journal.
Clare received a BFA in Book Arts (a degree with a focus on bookbinding and printmaking) from Portland’s Oregon College of Art and Craft, the beloved art school in the West Hills. Several years after graduation, Clare returned to OCAC where she worked as studio manager for the Book Arts department from 2010 to 2013. While helping students and instructors, Clare continued to work on her own craft: creating books, journals, broadsides, calendars, and many more forms of bound, printed matter.
Clare has been “combining word and image” under the name Tiger Food Press since 1999. As of 2013, the creative and commissioned work made under it has been her full time career. Check out tigerfoodpress.com to see a full range of Clare’s art, products, and inspiration.
